12 Tips for being a great podcast guest!

Since launching my podcast "Conversations with Creatives" back in March, I've learned a lot about what to do & what not to do.

If you have been asked to be a guest on a podcast, here's some tips for being a good guest!

1. Wear headphones

Audio is the most important part about a podcast. If it is a video podcast, you will want to make sure to have a clear camera to record as well as a nice background, even if it's just a white wall.

I recommend wearing headphones so that you can hear the person who is interviewing you, and make sure that the audio works well on their side.

2. Limit "likes" and "ums".

One of my biggest struggles is this one. I took Toastmasters (speech making) in high school & learned about how much I did this. It's still a struggle but make sure to think about this before the recording

3. Know the topics beforehand

If possible, know the general direction of the episode before recording so you can think of examples, stories and anecdotes. I tend to just ask questions I'm curious about so it's more of a conversation vs an interview.

4. Have good wifi

One of my biggest issues being a podcast host is the other person having spotty wifi. While most of my recordings happen in my studio (my podcast is local), I still do audio calls & it's my biggest stresser. There's a lag in the audio and some skips. It's a nightmare! Sometimes even strong wifi does this but try to avoid it by being in a good wifi area.

5. Make sure you are in a quiet space (and turn off electronic notifications!)

Another one of my pet peeves is background noise. Whether a dog, child, fan, person or in public, noises are amplified on the podcast. Having a quiet place to record is absolutely necessary to have the best sound quality!

6. Make sure to promote but not oversell your stuff

Being on a podcast is a place to share who you are, not your business. While you can talk about it, make sure to get your personality out there! People fall in love with a person before a service! Don't be too salesy!

7. Be real, but also memorable.

If you go on a podcast and leave and the listeners can't remember a single detail about you, you have failed. You need to make them remember you so make sure to share a story that grabs attention!

8. Don't be Nervous!

One of the biggest struggles my interviewees have is nervousness. Many of them it is their first interview for a podcast! But I tell them not to worry, I can always delete/edit if they want. I honestly

9. Request graphics for instagram & instagram story to promote the episode

One of the coolest things about being on a podcast is that you can share with your audience that you were asked to be featured. Make sure to have access to the different graphics to be able to share!

10. Send a thank you & make sure to try to feature the podcast host in the future

Make sure to thank the podcast host & reciprocate the kindness by featuring the person in the future!

11. Promote the heck out of it!

When you get on a podcast, make sure to promote it! sometimes people think the podcaster is the one to do that, but you need to make sure to promote it as well!

12. Find more podcasts to guest on!

I love the podcast group She Podcasts and they have opportunities to be guests! Make sure to check it out!
